Recently, I got to spend Mother’s Day weekend in Oak Island, NC. Besides visiting my family who live on Oak Island, I made sure to take time and explore the coastal flora and fauna. This includes visiting the Oak Island beach, exploring the nature trail around the coastal mudflats, and most importantly, paddleboarding!
If you don’t know where Oak Island, NC, is, it’s a quaint island south of Wilmington on the North Carolina coast. While at one point Oak Island, NC, was home to many red oak trees, today it’s mostly known for being a mix of beachfront rentals and residential homes. The island is a perfect mix of North Carolina locals and tourists alike.
Back to paddleboarding! I got to spend some time paddleboarding at Oak Island, NC. I spent time at The Point, which is by the inlet area near Holden Beach and the canal that runs through Oak Island. It was a beautiful place. But don’t take my word for it. Check out my YouTube video!

From the video you can see it’s a calm and simple place to paddleboard. I will say that fighting the tides at The Point was a workout. I’d recommend starting against the tide if you go out there. But make sure to NEVER get caught up in the inlet. You will get sucked out to sea if the tides are right.

The canal that runs through Oak Island, NC, is certainly tamer. If paddleboarding is a thing you want to do in Oak Island, I’d recommend starting here. The Davis Creek Kayak Dock, located near the recreation center, is where you can launch your paddleboard. Be mindful of the tides here as well. I would also watch out for oyster shells among the mud so you do not cut yourself or your paddleboard.
Paddleboarding is a great thing to do in Oak Island! If you get bored, you always have the beach to hang out at. Oak Island is a gorgeous destination in coastal North Carolina, and I hope you can visit. Now, go enjoy the day!
