Ford Bronco with tent on side next to forest road in Pisgah National Forest

Western North Carolina has a bounty of outdoor recreation opportunities. Pisgah National Forest is one of those. Pisgah National forest covers land south and northeast of Asheville, NC. Each section of Pisgah has thousands of acres of dense North Carolina woodlands, stretches of pristine mountain streams and miles of forest road perfect for exploring.

Car camping is Pisgah National Forest is something that’s always been on my bucket list. I frequently venture to Uwharrie and also find time to do day trips, but I rarely ever camp in Western North Carolina. So, I decided to give it a shot. I recently got a Ford Bronco too, so it was the perfect time to test out my car camping concept. Watch below for my experience out there in Pisgah!

Why Car Camp at Pisgah National Forest?

North Carolina in general has endless camping options. So you may be wondering, why go car camping at Pisgah National Forest or camp there in general? Well, it’s partly up to your opinion on how and where to camp, but Pisgah has a ton to offer that makes it special.

First, national forests are generally a good middle ground when it comes to primitive-style camping. The restrictions and rules are not too heavy (don’t abuse that) while still offering the backcountry feel depending on how deep you go. North Carolina state parks restrict any kind of primitive camping. National Parks are hard to come by around here. So, in my opinion, national forests are the way to go.

For car camping, Pisgah National Forest offers a lot that other national forests around the state may not. First, many sections of Pisgah National Forest are easily accessible from the main population centers of North Carolina. Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Greensboro aren’t too far away. Second, Pisgah is full of forest roads to explore. This is always my favorite part: driving around the forest roads and looking for a unique camping spot or just something interesting to check out.

Hopefully you get the chance to camp in Pisgah National Forest. Or just check out the place for a day trip. Pisgah National Forest and the entirety of Western North Carolina are always gems to treasure!
